I don’t really know if I agree with this. It was never intended to be controversial. Whether it is or isn’t, the only way that we can address controversy in science is with more data and careful analysis. That is why a considerable amount of data on the Piraha language is now being prepared that will be machine-readable and publicly available – so that anyone can test their own hypotheses and mine against the data. This work is being done mainly by Steve Piantadosi and Ted Gibson of MIT’s Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department, with the help of Laura Stearns and others in the laboratory team,

Reviews of DSTAS and advance praise for LCT are found under “Dan’s Books”, on this site.

My newest book for a general audience is Language: The Cultural Tool, LCT. This book makes the case that language is not an instinct or the result of an innate universal grammar, but that it is a tool that emerges from human cultures and the human brain. This book talks about the origin of human language and discusses some of the amazing variety between languages of the world, drawing extensively on my own research in the Brazilian Amazon with several different indigenous communities and languages. LCT shows that there is nothing known that is specifically linguistic about the human genome, human anatomy, or human development, other than the shape of the human vocal apparatus. It also observes that speech most likely developed after language. LCT talks about the “genius” of the pairings between languages and cultures in our species and concludes with a discussion of how our grammars and cultures work together to provide us with the forms and meanings of happiness.
