Why There are no Clitics

Why There Are No Clitics

Why There Are No Clitics was written when I was a formal linguist. Nevertheless, I think that the basic thesis is right – clitics, pronouns, and affixes may be treated as allomorphs.

This is a 1996 book that was originally distributed by SIL-UTA. It is an early version of a minimalist approach to pronominal allomorphy in which clitics and affixes are treated as allomorphs of pronouns. Affixes are morphological complements and clitics morphological adjuncts under this approach. Alternative analyses of some classic cases, as well as work on Yagua and Piraha, are included.
